A past recipient of the prestigious Solo Recitalist Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Joseph Wytko has performed solo recitals in Carnegie Recital Hall and San Francisco's Herbst Theater, and has appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, the World Saxophone Congress Orchestra (Minneapolis), and orchestras in Europe and Mexico. He serves as orchestral saxophonist with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, and has also performed as guest orchestral saxophonist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Grant Park Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Civic Orchestra, among others. Solo performances and master classes have been presented in China, Poland, England, France, Italy, Belgium, Canada, Mexico, in Guam, in Los Angeles and New York, and throughout the United States. As a result of a Senior Scholar Grant from the International Research and Exchanges Board in Washington, D. C., Dr. Wytko has also been featured as solo recitalist, guest artist concerto soloist, and Guest Professor in Skopje, Macedonia.
His recent guest artist schedule has included appearances at UCLA, San Diego State University, Abiquiu Chamber Music Festival (NM), Arizona State University Louise Lincoln Kerr Cultural Center, Beach Museum of Art (KS), Volland Store in the Flint Hills (KS), Kansas State University, in Paris, Morelia (Mexico), Brussels, Mons, Gent, Leuven (Belgium), Bourges (France), Oxfordshire and throughout the U.S. He has performed and presented master classes as featured artist at the Congreso Internacional de Clarinete y Saxophon in Mexico, and as solo and chamber music resident performer during two Ernest Bloch Composers' Symposiums in Newport, Oregon. Dr. Wytko has served as Guest Professor during the "2006 Muzikamp" organized by the Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel in Belgium, and at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Paris and L'Ecole Nationale de Musique et de Danse de Bourges (France). His current-recent schedule includes, for example, performances at the University of North Texas, Metro State University (Denver), Emporia State University, Middle Tennessee State University, the University of Mount Olive (NC), Colorado State University, the University of Nebraska-Kearney, California State University at Los Angeles, Chapman Conservatory of Music, La Bouvêche-Salle de Conférence (Orsay, France), the Paris Conservatory, Western Oregon University, George Fox University, Fort Lewis College, at New Mexico's Abiquiu Chamber Music Festival, the Conservatorio de las Rosas in Morelia (Mexico), Baylor University, Kansas State University, Valparaiso University, for Brandeis University's 2012-13 Scholarship Concert, and at various other institutions. Dr. Wytko served as the sole American Jurist for the 5th Concours International Adophe Sax in Dinant, Belgium in 2010 and a Jurist for the 2011 6th Concurso de Interpretación (Saxophone) in Morleia, Mexico.
Joseph Wytko, whose disc recordings have been featured on United Airlines and U.S. Airways "in flight audio entertainment," has recorded on the Brewster, Orion, ACA Digital, and TimeGrabber Digital record labels. His disc recording of Karel Husa's Elegie et Rondeau was credited by the composer as "perfectly musical, first-class playing – a magnificent treat." Recently released recordings include two CDs on the ACA Digital Recording label. Passions Large & Small(ACA CM20092), described by The Absolute Sound Magazine (May/June 2013) as "outstanding...sonics finely balanced between ambiance and clarity," includes the music of Jacques Ibert, Alfred Desenclos, William Albright, Brent Weaver, and Mikel Kuehn; and Recital Music for Saxophone (ACA CM20109) includes the music of Karel Husa, Leslie Bassett, Ryo Noda, Tommy Joe Anderson, and Hermann Reutter (please see Discography Page for more information regarding other recordings, purchasing options, etc.).
The subject of an article in the second edition of theNew Grove Dictionary of American Music, 2nd ed. (Oxford University Press), Dr. Wytko has also contributed five articles to this same publication. He has been awarded grants by the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music at the College of Musical Arts of Bowling Green State University, Arizona State University, the Arizona State University Emeritus College, the National Endowment for the Arts, the International Research and Exchanges Board (Washington, D.C.), the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and other organizations.
Saxophonist Wytko, who is listed in "Who's Who in America," holds degrees from Northwestern University (DM, MM) and West Virginia University (BME), and is Professor of Music Emeritus at Arizona State University and an Artist-Clinician with the Selmer Paris and Conn-Selmer USA. He served as Visiting Professor of Saxophone at the University of Georgia in 2010-11. In addition to his solo performing and teaching, he performs frequently with the trio Ascendo3 and the Joseph Wytko Saxophone Quartet, which has been featured on National Public Radio's Performance Today. He also performed with the quartet in the historic East Room of the White House in 1993, per invitation from the Office of the President of the United States.
